So How is Tap Water Tested for Contamination?
Having read one too many water safety stories I began to wonder how is tap water tested for contamination? As an aside I also just wanted to mention that I’m a firm believer that drinking the purest water I can get is benefiting my well being, as so much of what I have read links water quality to many of the illnesses that affect us today.
It’s what drove me initially into switching to buying and drinking bottled mineral water for long while. But, what with the cost of it and a desire to do something personal about cutting back on the amount of garbage we create eg. all those plastic bottles we throw away, I sought an alternative route by using a tap water filter system at home.

Reverse osmosis water filter systems are not ideal for residential use. They were originally developed for industrial and commercial usage. When reverse osmosis water filter systems were first introduced for residential use they were a huge seller. While reverse osmosis is not the best way to filter water, certainly it is better than no filter at all, but there are many disadvantages to drinking water from a reverse osmosis water filter.
As far as health concerns go, teverse osmosis water filter systems cannot filter anything that is molecularly smaller than water. Many pesticides, bacteria and chlorine are lighter than water and they are left behind in water that has gone through the membrane of a reverse osmosis water filter. Also, trace minerals that are essential for our health are stripped away from the water through a reverse osmosis water filter. This leaves us with de-mineralized water that is potential harmful to our health because of the pesticides.
